Country Club of Florida

Situated a couple of miles from Bonyton Beach, the course at the Country Club of Florida was originally built by members of Augusta National who enlisted Robert Bruce Harris to design an expansive layout that would be capable of attracting other “national members”.

In an area that’s generally as flat as a pancake, the architect managed to route the course through a system of dunes on the 4th, 5th, and 10th holes and cleverly use a ridge that runs through the property to separate the 6th and 11th holes.

Harris also duplicated the configuration of holes on each nine and sequenced them such that the same par is only ever played once consecutively (at the par fours around the turn at holes 9 and 10).

This balance is further enhanced by spreading the par threes to holes 4, 8, 13 and 17 with the longest and shortest on the back nine. Similarly, the par fives at 2, 6, 11 and 15 are arranged shortest on the front nine, longest on the back.

Lester George carried out a renovation of the course in 2006 when he retained the wonderful routing but upgraded the bunkering around the layout.
