One of my favorite courses in Northern Michigan, Forest Dunes has lots of variety and is a tough test for any golfer. The front 9 winds its way through the forest with many tight tee shots. You consistently face risk / reward options like taking on the upper fairway on 6 or cutting it over the diagonal bunker on 8.
On 10, the course begins to open up as the back nine winds through the sand dunes. The finishing stretch gives the golfer an opportunity to make up some shots as the course closes with two reachable par 5s and a reachable par 4 in the final four holes. The course also has a short par 3 "bye" hole which gets you back to the clubhouse and settles any unfinished matches.
8 - A longer dogleg left with a green that sits against a lake with a great view of the clubhouse. The golfer must pick and commit to a line off the tee - the choices are a short, safe shot left of the fairway bunker that leaves a longer approach shot to a demanding green or a drive that carries the fairway bunker and challenges the surrounding forest. The reward is a wedge into this green instead of a longer iron.
15 - Par 5 which requires you to favor the right side of the fairway in order to get home in two. What is really memorable is the punch bowl green which creates a unique short game challenge.
