Fountain Head

Donald Ross made a significant dent in the golf landscape for the majority of eastern states, but Maryland is relatively lacking in the Scot’s work. When you consider that the Chevy Chase Club features significant fingerprints from C.H. Alison, the only purely Ross course in the Old Line State may be Fountain Head Country Club.

Although much of the championship golf in Maryland is focused along the east coast, on land that still features a significant amount of slope as one nears the Atlantic Ocean, the state becomes increasingly mountainous as you head inland. Here you will find Hagerstown, where land was even enough to establish a modest metropolis, as well as hilly enough for Ross to complete a satisfactory golf course.

Ross was initially hired for just nine holes, however the project quickly became 18 when plans for the opening nine emerged. The opening nine reflect Ross’s original routing strategy, taking advantage of the dramatic roll of the hills, while much of the back nine is on land much more level than the front. Take advantage and make up for the strokes lost during the front nine!
