Designed by Robert Heaslip, Fox Meadow Golf Course lies only four miles from Charlottesville, via the Hillsborough River Bridge. Established by Simon Compton in 2000, this enterprising 18-hole layout was sold to another local businessman, Cory Gray, at the end of 2016.
Extending to 6,836 yards from the back markers, the course plays to a par of 72, arranged as two sets of returning nine holes across a 150-acre property. Water plays a part in proceedings on just a few occasions: there’s a pond to the right of the 326-yard 2nd, the short par three 7th plays to a peninsula green that’s backed by a small lake, and the doglegging 13th skirts another pond on the left as the fairway heads to the green.
Highlight holes include the first of the par fives at the 539-yard 3rd (rated stroke index 1, playing uphill to a very small green); the last of the par threes at the 172-yard 15th (with a hidden pot bunker lurking behind the green); and the 544-yard 18th which narrows and bends slightly left as the tree-lined fairway approaches a heavily sand-protected home green.
