Freudenstadt

Golf-Club Freudenstadt was founded in 1929 but the club’s current course is of more recent vintage. Rebuilt as a 9-hole track ten years after World War II ended, the course was eventually extended to an 18-hole layout by Hannes Scheiner in 1992.

The course now extends to 5,636 metres from the regular tees, with par set at 71 (36 out then 35 in). Holes are arranged as two returning nines, both of which end with par fives that lead back to the clubhouse. The front nine is routed around an equestrian centre in a large anti-clockwise loop then most of the holes on the back nine are laid out in woodland to the south of the property.

Highlight holes include the par four 1st hole (where a small pond comes into play on the right side of the fairway as it narrows and kinks slightly towards the green) and the par five 9th (rated stroke index 1) which bends left all the way from tee to green, with front bunkers guarding the left and right sides of the putting surface.

On the inward half, the left doglegging 13th is a tough par four (the first of four holes in a little compartment carved out of the forest) and it’s followed soon after by the last of the par threes at the 143-metre 17th, which plays to a greens that’s protected front right by a large L-shaped bunker.

World Top 100 Golf Courses

The latest ranking of the Top 100 Golf Courses in the World serves as the ultimate global golf bucket list. Most members of our World Top 100 Panel are seasoned golfers, each playing 20-30 of these courses annually while travelling extensively over decades to form their opinions on others. We recognise that opinions vary—even among our panel members. Rankings are subjective, and there are undoubtedly 50 or more courses in the UK and USA alone that could easily fit onto this list.
