Fujizakura Country Club is a hillside and woodland course located 1,000 meters above sea level on the slopes of Mt. Fuji. Each hole is framed by red pines and larches, combining natural beauty with strategic challenge. The layout offers great variety—doglegs, uphill and downhill shots, and carries over water—while the cleverly positioned bunkers and subtle undulations demand precision on every shot.
Several holes stand out for their character. The signature par-5 6th plays uphill toward Mt. Fuji, with a pond reflecting the “upside-down Fuji” and a long guarding bunker that dominates the approach. The par-3 7th features a wide, elevated green sloping sharply toward the adjacent pond, creating heavy psychological pressure. On the back nine, the long par-4 10th and 11th test players with distance, terrain, and tight OB lines, while the dramatic par-3 16th over water and the par-4 18th provide a thrilling finish. The 18th, in particular, requires a second shot over a winding creek to an elevated green, all with Fuji as a backdrop—an unforgettable closing hole.
A major renovation in the early 2000s transformed the course into a professional championship venue, and since 2005 it has hosted the Japan Golf Tour’s Fujisankei Classic. The course has been lengthened year by year, making both power and accuracy essential. Around the greens, tightly mown surrounds are beautifully maintained, offering multiple options for approach shots.
In sum, Fujizakura Country Club blends the grandeur of Mt. Fuji’s scenery with the demanding strategy of a tournament venue, standing proudly as one of Japan’s premier championship courses.
The latest ranking of the Top 100 Golf Courses in the World serves as the ultimate global golf bucket list. Most members of our World Top 100 Panel are seasoned golfers, each playing 20-30 of these courses annually while travelling extensively over decades to form their opinions on others. We recognise that opinions vary—even among our panel members. Rankings are subjective, and there are undoubtedly 50 or more courses in the UK and USA alone that could easily fit onto this list.
