Furness
Located on the west coast of Walney Island, which is accessed from Barrow-in-Furness by the Jubilee Bridge, the links course at Furness Golf Club dates back to 1872, making it one of the oldest golf clubs in England.
Founded by Scottish workers from Dundee, the club started out with a 6-hole layout on Biggar Bank which was expanded to nine holes before eventually becoming the 18-hole layout that’s in play today.
Nowadays, the course extends to 6,564 yards from the back markers, playing to a par of 71 (36 out then 35 in). Highlight holes include the six shore holes, starting with the long par four 7th and ending with the par four 12th.
Other holes of note include the short par three 6th (often played into the wind); the tough par four 13th (rated stroke index 2); and the slightly right veering 18th, with out of bounds to the right of a fairway that leads to a long, front-to-back sloping home green.

The latest ranking of the Top 100 Golf Courses in the World serves as the ultimate global golf bucket list. Most members of our World Top 100 Panel are seasoned golfers, each playing 20-30 of these courses annually while travelling extensively over decades to form their opinions on others. We recognise that opinions vary—even among our panel members. Rankings are subjective, and there are undoubtedly 50 or more courses in the UK and USA alone that could easily fit onto this list.
