Galt

Galt Country Club, the oldest golf facility in the Waterloo region, started out with a 9-hole course in 1906 and then expanded to 18 holes in 1930. Designed by Stanley Thompson, the parkland layout enjoys panoramic views of the Grand River.

The following edited extract is from Stanley Thompson and Icons of Canada by James M. Harris:

“Galt CC is located in the city of Cambridge which is about 90 km southwest of Toronto and just 30 km from Kitchener-Waterloo at the confluence of the Grand and Speed Rivers. Cambridge was formed in 1974 by the amalgamation of the towns of Preston and Hespeler and the hamlet of Blair with the old city of Galt which dates as far back as the 1920s.

Stanley Thompson rebuilt and added nine holes to the Galt CC around the same time that he designed and built the nearby Westmount G&CC. The original nine holes at Galt were designed by Lambton pro Percy Barrett in 1909 on farmland along the banks of the Grand River.

It originally had been called Waterloo G&CC and then Riverview for a short time. The announcement about Galt G&CC was made in late 1928, the construction done in 1929, and the course open in 1930. Both Westmount and Galt were completed just in time for Stanley to still have been paid for his work, something that became a problem after 1930 and 1931.”
