Gamle Fredrikstad
The city of Fredrikstad lies where the river Glomma meets the Skagerrak strait, with Gamle Fredrikstad Golfklubb situated across the river from the Old Town. The landscape here is rather flat and featureless, so a fair amount of earth was moved by Rolf Jensen and Paal Midtvaage to fashion the fairways before play got under way in 2012.
The course measures 6,323 metres from the back tees, arranged as two non-returning nines, with par set at 72 (36 out then 36 back). Water comes into play at more than half the holes, especially the closing sequence from the par four 15th onwards. Holes 1, 7, 12 and 15 are all short par fours which offer an excellent chance of bagging a birdie.
Highlight holes include the par four 2nd (rated stroke index 1) where the fairway slides past a pond on the right before narrowing to an offset green; the par three 13th which plays to an island green; and the 466-metre 18th with the hole veering right from the tee to a peninsula green that juts out into a lake in front of the clubhouse.
World Top 100 Golf Courses
The latest ranking of the Top 100 Golf Courses in the World serves as the ultimate global golf bucket list. Most members of our World Top 100 Panel are seasoned golfers, each playing 20-30 of these courses annually while travelling extensively over decades to form their opinions on others. We recognise that opinions vary—even among our panel members. Rankings are subjective, and there are undoubtedly 50 or more courses in the UK and USA alone that could easily fit onto this list.
