Bisected by the Lerrone river, the layout at Garlenda Golf Club was planned by John Morrison before he died in 1961 and completed by Commander John Harris in 1964, an architect who fashioned more than a dozen courses in Italy, including the highly regarded Biella, Venezia and Menaggio & Cadenabbia.

Garlenda

The Lerrone River is the main cause of its division The course at Garlenda Golf Club was planned by John Morrison before he died in 1961. The layout was then completed three years later John Harris, another respecte architect who designed more than twelve courses in Italy which included the highly-regarded Biella, Venezia and Menaggio & Cadenabbia.

The course is less than 6,000 metres from the markers at the back, and the par is set at 72. Holes 1 to 2 and 13 to 18 are on the side of the clubhouse facing the river, while the remaining ten holes playing on the opposite side.

Highlights include the left-doglegging the par 4th (played by a triangular green that has two bunkers on the left and right of the putt) as well as the short par three seventh with an out of bounds on the right and left.

The back nine 14th is a mighty 5-par par (with bunkers to the right side to catch those who play too conservatively away from the fairway's incline) The left doglegging 18th is a difficult finishing par four that has a 3-tier green at home.

We recognise that opinions vary—even among our panel members. Rankings are subjective, and there are undoubtedly 50 or more courses in the UK and USA alone that could easily fit onto this list.
