Gatton Manor Hotel & Golf Club is now under new ownership, so we’re hoping to see the parkland course that John Harris designed in 1969 flourish once more. Who could forget the finishing hole which is one of the best in the region?

Gatton Manor

Situated between the picturesque Surrey villages of Ockley, Walliswood and Forest Green, the woodland course at Gatton Manor Hotel & Country Club is a late 1960s design from John Harris, with streams and ponds coming into play on several of the holes.

Extending to 6,637 yards from the back markers and playing to a par of 72 (out in 35 then back in 37), the course is laid out as two returning nines, with three par fives featuring on the considerably longer back nine.

Highlight holes include the 186-yard 4th (“Justice Williams”), where the green sits behind a small lake; the right doglegging 369-yard 6th (“Commander’s Gem”) with a stream eating into the left side of the fairway in front of the green.

On the back nine, the 264-yard 11th (“Mrs Scarlett”) features the same meandering stream in front of the putting surface on this hole, while the 404-yard 18th (“Champ Field”) has another invasive watercourse running across the front of the home green.
