Golden Horseshoe (Green)

Virginia’s Golden Horseshoe 45-hole golf facility is recognised as one of the best in the business, featuring the Gold and Green 18-hole layouts and a lovely 9-hole executive course called Spotswood, named in honour of an 18th century Lieutenant Governor of the Old Dominion state.

A 9-hole layout opened here in 1947, followed by the Robert Trent Jones-designed 18-hole Gold course in 1963. Rees Jones, son of the original architect, added the Green course in 1991, returning to renovate his father’s Gold design a few years later.

A round on the Green begins with four sturdy par fours, followed by a solid 3-shot par five that dog legs to the right past 13 bunkers that line the left side of the fairway to the green.

Three of the next six holes are par threes, the pick of which is the 11th hole. The tee box plays to a green that’s fronted by a pond and surrounded by four beautiful bunkers that are set into the hill behind the putting surface.

A trio of tough par fours then ensues before the home stretch is completed with a tight par five that just might yield a welcoming birdie finish.

The Green was the venue for the USGA Senior Women’s Amateur Championship in 1998 and the 28th U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links Championship was held on the course in 2004.
