Golf del Sur's original 18-hole North and South nines proved to be so popular that an additional 9-hole Links nine was subsequently added to cope with the demand. Sadly at the start of 2021, the 27-hole facility reverted to 18 holes when the South nine was sold for property development.

Golf del Sur

Pepe Gancedo, the architect of The Golf del Sur complex when it was first inaugurated in 1987. It was around the same time Amarilla was built. Amarilla Golf Course was developed and both golf courses currently sit next to each adjacent to the busy Reina Sofia airport located on the southern shores of Teneife.

The 18-hole initial North as well as South nines - which had distinct Black volcanic Sand bunkers proved so popular that a second nine-hole Links nine was later added (sadly with sand hazards that were more conventional) to meet the demand. In the year 2021, at the beginning the 27-hole facility was changed to 18 holes after it was announced that the South nine had to be sold off for development of the property.

With holiday accommodation and situated near the ocean the del Sur golf complex has evolved with the times in order to ensure it is a part of the golfers in a highly competitive market. Manuel Pinero was involved in the new millennium's renovation work and updating holes 3 4 and 5 of the Links in 2005, and also landscaping the 3rd hole on the North in the year following.

The book 500 great golf holes by the author George Peper and the editors of GOLF magazine includes the par four 457-yard hole in the North nine at Golf del Sur: "The deserted ravine, lava wasteland and barren cliffs on the left contrast sharply with this luscious and long hole. It is a graveyard for golf balls for slicers. It's a very fine line that separates danger from safety particularly when the wind is blowing across the open slope. Palm trees are scattered across the left side on the green, however it's the ground below them that provides the most terrifying experience. Black sand bunkers that look threatening protect the bases of the trees and stretch across the entire left side of the narrow, deep green."

In its early years The club hosted four tournaments of the Tenerife Open on the European Tour between 1989 and 1994. The tournament saw wins by Jose Maria Olazabal in the first two years, and David Gilford and Mark James in 1993 and 1994. In the next year, a special episode in the Shell's Wonderful World of Golf was played here, featuring Ernie Els matched against Phil Mickelson.

The inaugural Tenerife Ladies Open event on the Ladies European Tour was staged at Golf del Sur in 1989 in 1989, with Raquel Carriedo scoring a one-shot victory over her closest competitor. The event returned to the golf course in 2007 in which Australian Nikki Garrett finished two shots clear in front of Trish Johnson, and Tania Elosegui winning the 6th edition of the tournament.

Las Americas and Adeje courses began in 1998 and have since doubled that number of course on the tourist area of southern Tenerife in a single fell leap. Along with the more expensive Abama resort that launched in 2005 The five courses that are located in this area of the island give residents and visitors to golf a great selection.
