Designed by Gordon Oliver, the course at Green Acres Golf Club was officially opened by Sir Dallas Brooks in 1950. Fairways are laid out alongside the meandering Yarra River, with natural billabongs coming into play at several holes.
In the modern era, the course extends to just under 6,000 metres from the back tees, playing to a par of 71 (36 out then 35 in), with holes arranged as two returning nines.
Notable holes include the 420-metre 6th (rated stroke index 1), doglegging right around a long, narrow water hazard which runs almost the full length of the fairway. The green slopes from back to front and it’s guarded by two large bunkers on the left, one short of the putting surface and one greenside.
On the back nine, the 330-metre 18th concludes the round in fine style. It’s a relatively short narrow par four that bends slightly right and climbs a gentle slope towards the home green. The approach shot must avoid all three bunkers angled across the front of the putting surface to have any real chance of finishing with a par or better.
