Greywolf Golf Course

Greywolf is located in the Purcell Mountains, around a two-hour drive southwest from Banff in British Columbia. Intrawest, the leading North American mountain resort operator and the BMR golf company jointly own the course. Greywolf was designed by renowned golf course architect Doug Carrick and opened for play in 1999.

There was much to do in arriving at the finished article when this mountain course was built – miles of drain pipe to catch water from the nearby ski slope every spring, an irrigation system to maintain water pressure over an elevation change of 400 feet, fencing to stabilize slopes and prevent erosion, shipment of sand, gravel and earth – all this and more was undertaken to arrive at a fantastic finished product. Greywolf has the power to “overwhelm, inspire and rejuvenate the golfer’s soul” says the club.

Greywolf may have wonderful changes in elevation, spectacular views and thought provoking design but what truly sets it apart is the quality of turf. Holes were constructed from tee through fairway to green using bentgrass which many feel is the secret to giving the course such a manicured appearance.

Each of the Greywolf loops of nine is named. The outward half are “The Cliffhanger Nine” and the inward half are “The Panorama Nine” and there are many visually stunning holes on the course but the magnificent 6th hole is worth special consideration as it is truly one of the most dramatic and awe-inspiring par threes in the country. The signature 6th is appropriately named “Cliffhanger” and it measures 200 yards in length. You must handle the swirling wind from Toby Creek valley as you stand on the tee box and evaluate your tee shot. Your ball must carry over Hopeful Canyon onto an island green with the only bail out to the right, as there is a vertical rock drop off to the front, back and left.
