The city of Asheville, North Carolina, has become a popular destination thanks to its Appalachian location and local tendency toward the eccentric. The vibe is embodied by The Omni Grove Park Inn, with its cobbled construction and Spanish tile roof. There is nothing strange about a Donald Ross golf course, but it’s tough to imagine a better accompanying architect for a resort in North Carolina.
The course is a comfortable distance, just 6,400 yards from the back tees, relying on the rolling hills to defend par. It’s a strong enough track that a number of iconic pros have stopped by, including Bobby Jones, Ben Hogan and Jack Nicklaus. In terms of celebrity rounds, Barack Obama — an “honest 13” handicapper, to quote the former President — was another guest of honor during his time in office.
As with many Ross properties, the architect had to battle small acreage when completing his routing. No. 17 may remind a few of St. Andrews No. 17, with a hotel building looming over the green on this par three. Give those watching from the porch something to write home about!
