Hamburg-Ahrensburg
Fifty years after opening in 1964, the Bernhard von Limburger parkland layout at Golfclub Hamburg-Ahrensburg underwent a large-scale renovation by Christoph Städler, involving the renewal of tees and putting surfaces, along with a new island green at the par three 12th. A new par three 2nd hole was also introduced, allowing the old par four 12th and par three 13th to combine into one new par four hole.
The layout now extends to just under 5,600 metres, playing to a par of 71 (35 out then 36 in). Water hazards come into play on several occasions: at the left doglegging par four 3rd, the par three 12th; and at the par five 16th and par five 18th, where ponds protect the front of the green at both these closing holes.
Other holes of note include the left doglegging par four 6th and short par four 9th on the outward half, along with the short par four 14th (with four bunkers surrounding the putting surface) and the tougher par four 17th (stroke index 4) which veers left from the tee and narrows towards the green.

We recognise that opinions vary—even among our panel members. Rankings are subjective, and there are undoubtedly 50 or more courses in the UK and USA alone that could easily fit onto this list.
