What a phenomenal golf course this is.

So lucky to have played it on a beautiful sunny afternoon, and a gentle 1 club wind.

This golf course is just fun, plain and simple. A low marker will have to plot his way around to score his best, and a higher marker will have ample opportunity to make rare birdies, and even eagles when the course is running and fast like it was today. I would rather be a member here than many bigger name courses.

Special mention to the bunkering, the best I’ve seen in the UK, both in design and in sand quality. The traditional links pot bunkers with revetted faces are great, but they also utilise some more modern bunkering in places as well and it doesn’t look out of place at all. It all feels very natural, and the sand is beautiful. Consistent sand, you can flub and run it or spin it, and you can catch it clean out of the fairway traps if needed too.

The four par 3 holes are wonderful. 2 stronger ones and 2 shorter ones, some fabulous green complexes, with a special mention to the 5th hole, a very long but narrow green with subtle roll offs everywhere, fabulous hole.

The par 5 2nd is a little bit weak, but the other 2 par 5’s are brilliant risk reward. 7 if you hit the fairway you can cut the corner and go for the green in 2, but the tee shot is very well bunkered. 14 is a fabulous par 5, a hole that it’s useful to have played it first, as you can cut off far more of the corner off the tee if you wish, but it’s fraught with danger with a water farm up the entire left of the hole. The second shot if you go for the green is also brilliant risk reward, with a green that all funnels in but if you miss it, up and down will be very difficult, and the hazard cuts in on the left much more than it appears to from the view of the 2nd shot.

The variety of the par 4s are excellent. Short medium and long. The picks of the bunch are the 6th a great longish par 4 with a creek crossing the hole 40 yards short of the green, and trouble all around the green, but if you hit a straightish shot everything feeds in from both sides. The 8th is a short par 4 where you could almost drive the green with the correct wind, but it’s a very high risk low reward play, best to hit a long iron and then face a 110y shot to a blind green, but where you can usually always see the top of the flag. 12 and 13 are probably the two best holes on the course, 12 a brutal 470y par 4, where hitting the fairway is a must to get a view of a green surrounded by huge dunes, a card wrecked if I’ve ever seen one. 13 is probably the signature hole, with a new tee installed with beautiful views over the Solent, and then a downhill second to a perched green, once again with remarkable views. A shortish par 4 but once again, a very intimidating hole.

I would never tire of playing this course, it’s fair, it’s fun, the conditioning was lovely. First class!
