Hertfordshire Golf & Country Club

A rare European design from Jack Nicklaus II, son of The Golden Bear, the 18-hole layout at the Hertfordshire Golf & Country Club first opened its door to golfers in the early 1990s.

Holes are laid out on an estate that was owned hundreds of years ago by a religious order and the clubhouse is the rather grand 18th century Broxbournebury Mansion.

Today, the course extends to just under 6,300 yards, playing to a par of 70 (36 out then 34 in), with holes set out as two returning nines.

Water hazards come into play occasionally, most notably on the inward half, where a couple of big ponds feature on five of the closing six holes.

Highlight holes include long par fours at the 8th and 16th (stroke index 2 and 1), along with the only par five on the back nine at the 17th, where the green sits behind water.

The star of the show however appears two holes earlier, and it’s the par three 15th which plays in the opposite direction across the same small lake to a peninsula green.

World Top 100 Golf Courses

The latest ranking of the Top 100 Golf Courses in the World serves as the ultimate global golf bucket list. Most members of our World Top 100 Panel are seasoned golfers, each playing 20-30 of these courses annually while travelling extensively over decades to form their opinions on others. We recognise that opinions vary—even among our panel members. Rankings are subjective, and there are undoubtedly 50 or more courses in the UK and USA alone that could easily fit onto this list.
