The layout at Hickory Hills Country Club dates back to 1926, when John T. Woodruff laid out eighteen holes for the membership. In the modern era, the course can be stretched to more than 7,100 yards from the back markers. It was the home course of Payne Stewart before he turned professional.
It’s been suggested that Perry Maxwell may actually have designed the club’s course, though there’s no mention of this in author Christopher Clouser’s book The Midwest Associate, published in 2006. It’s thought the first nine opened in May 1925, with the second nine following in July 1927.
Unfortunately, even if Maxwell did have a hand in the layout, there’s little of his work left intact in the modern era.
