Highland Gate

Nestled in the Steenkampsberg mountain range near Dullstroom, the Highland Gate Golf & Trout Estate boasts an Ernie Els signature course as the main sporting attraction of an upmarket residential development.

The 18-hole layout is set at high altitude among some of the most scenic terrain in Mpumalanga, where less than a third of the enormous 1,750-acre property will be developed, allowing plenty of scope for residents to enjoy a variety of outdoor pursuits.

Ernie Els had this to say about the golfing element of the project: “When you hear golfers say they were torn between hitting their next shot or pausing to take a photo of the surrounding scenery, you know it has to be a very special place. Highland Gate is definitely that kind of place.

It’s now more than 10 years since Greg Letsche and myself first visited this site, but the memory is still fresh in my mind. As a golf course designer you feel blessed to be able to work with an area of outstanding natural beauty, but also a real sense of responsibility to do justice to such a wonderful location.
