Located 20 kilometres or so to the west of Alborg, Europe’s cleanest city, lies Himmerland Golf & Spa Resort in the exposed north of Jutland. Here you will find northern Europe’s largest golf resort comprising of 45 holes and also extensive practice facilities. Himmerland certainly has plenty of golf on offer but if you want to play the best course then choose the Backtee course, which was originally laid out by Jan Sederholm in 1993. In 2011/12 the course (formerly called the New) closed for a complete redesign by Spogárd & VanderVaart Golf Course Architects. The refashioned 7,382-yard course reopened in April 2013 and was renamed Backtee in readiness to host the European Tour from 2014. The first European Tour event played on Danish soil (the Nordic Open) was hosted at Simon’s Golf Club in 2003. The latest “Made in Denmark” tournament, which is now in its fourth season, is already a more successful event than its predecessor. Himmerland Golf & Spa Resort is no stranger to pro events however. In 1995, the New course (as it was then called) was where Thomas Bjorn landed his inaugural professional victory, winning the Himmerland Open. The Backtee may stretch out to almost 7,400 yards from the tips but there are five tees from which to choose, so this expansive and often windswept course is playable for most golfers. |
Reviews for Himmerland (Backtee)
Upon arrival to this place, you know are are at a special place. Of course I was expecting a lot. I specifically made a 5h drive to come to this golf course. I always wanted to play and with the recent focus, having the European tour passing this club, I just had to try. And I can only say, it did not disappoint.
The setting with spa and housing connected to the course made it easy to bring my wife for an overnight stay. Not a hard convince (non-golfing wife!).
the Golf course was in impeccable shape when I visited. Challenged by the greens, the hills and the wind made it a troublesome day at the course looking at the scoring. But, it also made it really fun. The ending with hole 18 doing nothing but punish you if you are not hitting your driver where you want it as well as the approach. Also the icon Himmerland Hill par 3 is magnificant. I was lucky enough to walk away with a par, celebrating it like a hole in one!
It is far away from most things, but certainly worth the drive.

After the redesign a couple of year ago, the Backtee course should now be rated to be in the top 5-7.. The place a true golf resort, the hotel, spa and restaurant are top quality. The course itself is cool. Modern shaped greens and bunkers, good variation of holes in the hilly landscape. On some of the holes winds are a big factor! Superb condition throughout and really kind staff all around! If your ever nearby, don't hesitate, you'll love it!
