Literally just a stones throw away from Forest Pines is the little known Holme Hall Golf Club. Played here yesterday as the search for fast draining playable courses continue despite the recent downpours. Also selected this course as it is in the Top 10 for Lincolnshire.

Whilst not a patch on it's near neighbour, this was a very pleasant round over this flat course. The car park was quite busy as was the course despite teeing off at 1pm, a sign of the issues facing golf courses in the area which will be shut with the weather, thus making courses like Holme Hall busier

The course was on 18 holes and 13 full greens. The wettest part of the course was close to the clubhouse. The course is laid out over flat ground on well draining soil, so even in weather like we have had, you did get run on the ball.

It's a pleasant tree lined course, surrounded by a Pig Farm and unfortunately a large steel works is in view on some holes. But the routing was pleasant and the holes framed quite nicely.

There wasn't a lot of difference between fairway and light rough, and the greens had been spiked for drainage but they were interesting with many little nuances in them to keep your focus.

A good mixture of par 3's (4), par 5's (2) and remainder 4's varying in length from 300 yards to 440 yards (3 par 4's at this length).

After a gentle par 5 opener the round settles down with the 1st par 3 thrown in after 3 holes followed by a nice stretch around hole 6 and 7. The 7th is SI2 measuring 440 yards. A wide fairway leaves a long 2nd shot to a green hidden to the right. A pretty looking hole.

The front 9 ends with another par 5 back towards the clubhouse. The 2nd 9 starts with a good par 3 in front of the clubhouse, 173 yards long to a 2 tier green.

Bunkering throughout the course is strategically placed and the greens, as mentioned above have interesting slopes and valleys. The best of the bunch is the green on SI1 15th.

The pick of the par 3's for me was the 13th, 160 yards, with bunkers front and to the side and framed by daffodils. This is followed by a short par 4, which plays narrow and you can find yourself blocked out. A nice easy fade off the tee works a treat though. The par 3 16th plays over gorse bushes before a pleasant par 4 17th and a short finishing hole measured at 363 yards back to the clubhouse.

The gorse suggests heathland feel and it certainly has this framed by coniferous trees and silver birch.

In Summer the fairways will run fast and long and putting I suspect will be interesting on the green complexes. I will certainly return.
