The Magellan Golf Course is one of the shortest layouts at Hot Springs Village. It lacks the length of other courses at a wonderful golf facility but its tricky greens – renovated in 2012 – ensure golfers of all skill levels are challenged here.

All told, there are 171 holes in use across the Hot Springs Village complex, made up of seven 18-hole layouts, one 27-hole set-up, and one private 18-hole course called the Diamante. The Magellan was the fifth to appear, opening for public play in 1996.

In The American Golf Resort Guide, author Daniel Wexler writes: “the 6,494-yard Magellan is easily the shortest of the regulation courses, but despite having only two par fours over 400 yards, it still manages to offer a reasonable challenge.

Favorites here include a pair of short par fives, the 489-yard pond-fronted 7th and the 476-yard 13th, which dares a similar lake carry on approach. The 447-yard 8th is the strongest of the two-shotters, while the 366-yard creek-flanked 10th rates as the most engaging.”

Magellan is a short course. The first hole is welcoming, fairway bunker left. The redan green is sandwiched between two bunkers. The 2nd is a good birdie oppty. Short dog leg right with a large fairway bunker left. Consider laying up. Anything in the fairway right of the bunker is a flip wedge in. The first par three is mid-length. It has a large L shaped bunker front and right. The first par five is a reachable dogleg right. Tree lined with a left fairway bunker and one greenside. The fifth is another good birdie hole. Leans right with the only hazard being the large fairway bunker left. The 6th is a mid-range par three. It is rated the toughest of the par threes. The 7th is the shortest par five. It bends right and has a left and right fairway bunker in the landing area. The green is nestled behind a water hazard. Definitely reachable, but do not be suckered in like yours truly. The 8th is the longest par four on the front. Leans left and is the number one handicap hole. Fairway bunkers on both sides of the landing zone and one front right. The front ends with another good birdie oppty, short dogleg left.

The back starts with a par four. Favor left of center off the tee to take the creek out of play. The 11th is the longest par three, but it is still well under 200 yards. The 12th leans left, short par four with a long fairway bunker and water hazard left. Consider laying up, anything right of the bunker will leave you with a flip wedge. The 13th is a reachable par five. Aim left of the right fairway bunker off the tee. Once again, this green is tucked behind a water hazard, which should make you think twice. The 14th is a straight away par four with no hazards other than being tree-lined. The 15th is a long par five and it gives me great pleasure to say you probably cannot get home in two. Off the tee be left of the right fairway bunker. There are two cross bunkers on the right side starting about 150 yards out. The 16th is a short right leaning par four. Consider laying up to your favorite yardage. There is a pesky little fairway bunker in the middle of the fairway about 110 yards out. Good birdie hole. The last par three is the shortest par three with a wraparound bunker on the left side. The back ends with the longest par four on the course. There are two fairway bunkers left as well as a greenside bunker left. The hole plays easier from the right (I think)

Decent course.
