The Clubs at Houston Oaks
The Clubs at Houston Oaks is located in Hockley on 900 acres of land formerly owned by the Tenneco Oil & Gas Company, where it operated as the firm’s headquarters and family retreat facility in the 1950s and 1960s. It later became Tennwood Country Club before the current ownership transformed it into The Clubs at Houston Oaks in 2006.
The Alvis, Haven and Watson families now operating this recreational facility have developed the amenities over time to include a Gun Club, Equestrian Club, Fishing Club, Tennis Club and Wellness Club... in addition to the Golf Club, of course, which features a 7,007-yard layout and a short 9-hole course with seven par threes.
Architect Chet Williams redesigned and renovated the main 18-hole course in 2016, bringing into play an island green on the par three 5th hole and a split fairway at the par four 11th hole. All the bunkers were reworked and Celebration Bermuda grass was introduced on the fairways, with TifEagle Bermuda used on the greens.
Chet Williams said: “We incorporated some very interesting and intricate movement throughout the course including the fairways, roughs, greens, and surrounds. We tried to keep the earthwork to a minimum to leave the property in the most natural state as we were provided.
The most defining element of the course is an abundance of large oak trees that the course winds among. Many of these trees are over 200 years old and hence the name Houston Oaks. Every hole on the course is unique, and most importantly I think the course is great fun to play.”
The club annually hosts events for the South Texas PGA and Texas Golf Association, and the 114th Texas Amateur Championship is due to be held here in 2023.
