Howley Hall

The Howley Hall estate dates back to the late 16th century and the golf club’s clubhouse was once the Bailiff’s house. A 9-hole golf course was brought into play in 1900 and this was expanded to an 18-hole layout eight years later.

Jonathan Gaunt oversaw a bunker renovation from 2013 to 2016, when existing sand hazards were refurbished and twenty-five others were added. Martin Compton of C&C Golfscapes was the contractor who carried out the work.

Today, this tree-lined track extends to just over 6,500 yards from the tips, occupying a property of around 100 acres, with par set at 71 (35 out then 36 in). There’s only one par five on the front nine (at the 6th) and the round ends with a par three.

Highlights include the first (and shortest) of the par threes at the 167-yard 4th; tough par fours at the 405-yard 5th and 420-yard 7th; and the slightly left veering par four 15th which plays to a back to front sloping green guarded by three bunkers.

World Top 100 Golf Courses

The latest ranking of the Top 100 Golf Courses in the World serves as the ultimate global golf bucket list. Most members of our World Top 100 Panel are seasoned golfers, each playing 20-30 of these courses annually while travelling extensively over decades to form their opinions on others. We recognise that opinions vary—even among our panel members. Rankings are subjective, and there are undoubtedly 50 or more courses in the UK and USA alone that could easily fit onto this list.
