Huapai

Located in the upper reaches of Waitemata Harbour, close to RNZAF Base Auckland Whenuapai, the narrow, tree-lined fairways at Huapai Golf Club have been in play since the late 1930s, when the original course was set out.

Many changes have been made across the 115-acre property since then, of course, but it’s reckoned holes 1, 2, 4, 9 and 15 remain largely intact from the initial layout that Dr. Merv Harris put in place as World War II got under way.

Today, the course extends to almost 6,000 metres from the back tees, with par set at 70 (35 out then 35 in). Water comes into play just a few times: a central irrigation lake lies between holes 4, 6 and 18 and a similar hazard is positioned between the 12th and 13th.

Highlights include the tough par four 5th (rated stroke index 2); the long par three 10th (overlooking the Upper Waitemata Harbour); and the par five 18th which veers slightly right towards the home green, with water to the right and out of bounds to the left of the fairway.
