Indigo Run

Jack Nicklaus has designed many signature golf courses at this point in his career, so the Golf Club at Indigo Run can separate itself by boasting that it hosts twice as much Jack in its design. Which is to say, the course was co-designed by both the Golden Bear and his son, Jack Nicklaus II. The younger Jack has held a long career working for Nicklaus Design but this Hilton Head project was the first where he worked on a level playing field with dad.

The club, one of the few privates on Hilton Head, follows many of the hallmarks of golf on the island, winding through lowcountry forest and occasionally going along and over water. The course features a number of large bunkers, adding a somewhat unique Nicklaus twist on the island’s formula.

Many architects have created takes on Tillinghast’s holes from Bethpage Black but Indigo Run may be the only with a hole inspired by Bethpage Red: No. 15 features a huge cluster of bunkers splitting the fairway in two, à la Red No. 13. The difference here is that, at 331 yards, players can choose to go left, right or over the bunkers on the way to the green.
