Robert Trent Jones was eighty-three years young when Ipswich Country Club opened its tees for play in 1989. Ipswich, one of the master’s final designs, plays tough through woodland where housing does influence proceedings from time to time.
“Though [Ipswich is] hardly a ground breaker at so late a stage in his career, fans of Trent’s ‘Heroic’ school of design will not be disappointed,” writes Daniel Wexler in The American Private Golf Club Guide.
“Typically demanding holes include the 221-yard 5th (all carry, with water and sand leaving little margin for error), the 552-yard lake-guarded 6th, the 432-yard 8th (where a creek fronts the angled green), and the 527-yard 10th which, like the 509-yard 1st, is eminently reachable, but only with a long approach over sand and water.”
