Review:

Driving into the car park at the Isle of Purbeck Golf Club on a gloriously sunny day and witnessing the view, certainly whets the appetite for a round of golf. Quite simply, it has to be one of the best panaromic views from any golf course anywhere.Having read some of the previous reviews I was a little concerned regarding the greens and whether they’d spoil the experience. I needn’t have worried as they were in very good condition; granted they weren’t fantastically quick but they had a nice pace to them and they ran true.Undeniably, the course layout is well thought out with many of the natural contours having been used creatively to present some delightful holes. For me, stand out holes were the all of the par three’s at the 4th, 9th, 11th and 15th. None of them are over 200 yards but they don’t need to be. They are well bunkered and playing in any sort of breeze, or stronger wind, makes them tough to play. There are also some good par 4’s at the 2nd, 10th and 12th. The 12th I thought was particular strong when played into the wind but the others are good strong holes in their own right. The star of the show though has to go to the par four 5th. It is simply stunning from tee to green. The view alone of Studland Bay opening out in the distance behind the green takes your breath away. This is heathland golf at its very best. When I played in August 2014, the weather had been hot and dry for a sustained period and I’d hope that that is why the fairways were not at their best. But to be fair to the club they had put preferred lies in place, which was sensible. Some of the tees too were a little tired and just looked as though a bit more care and attention was required. This I thought was a particular shame as there is plenty of teeing area ground available on every hole. Overall, the Isle of Purbeck GC is well worth a visit. It appears the previous issues with the greens have been addressed and with a little more TLC elsewhere, in my opinion, it could find itself rising up the rankings again.Steve Searle
