Jönköping is situated at the southern end of Sweden's second largest inland body of water – Lake Vättern in Småland – and the 18-hole layout at Jönköpings Golfklubb has operated in the city since 1938, making it the oldest golf club in the province.

The club was registered with the national golf body in March 1938 as the 14th member of the Swedish Golf Association and seven months later a 9-hole course was inaugurated. In September 1961 an extended 18-hole layout opened, with the opening shot played from the current 2nd tee box, which was the first new hole.

Today, the course extends to 5,581 metres from the back markers, playing to a par of 70. Feature holes include the left doglegging par four 6th (rated stroke index 1); back-to-back par threes at the 10th and 11th; and the only par five on the back nine at the 446-metre 14th, where the fairway is blocked by trees in front of the green, forcing an aerial approach.
