The Carthagena is the 2nd course at John O’Gaunt Golf Club but its signature 16th is memorable. The split fairway plunges down to a double-tiered green surrounded by trees and bunkers. F.W. Hawtree laid out the first nine in the 1960s and his son Martin fashioned the second nine in the 1970s.

John O'Gaunt (Carthagena)
Located between Bedford and Cambridge, John O’Gaunt Golf Club is named after the 1st Duke of Lancaster and fourth son of King Edward III, who held the manor of nearby Sutton during the 14th century.
The club was founded in 1948 with an 18-hole course designed by Fred Hawtree and he returned in the 1960s to add another nine holes. His son Martin then fashioned a further nine a decade later, forming the Carthagena course.
Today, the layout measures 5,833 yards from the back tees, with both par and the standard scratch score set at 69. The front nine, featuring three par threes and no par fives, plays almost 400 yards shorter than the inward half.
The back nine starts and finishes with a par five, and in between those two holes there’s a lovely mix of one-shot and two-shot holes, with the tight, left doglegged 16th the signature hole, playing down over a large, centrally-positioned tree to a two-tiered green..
