Katameya Dunes is truly an oasis in the desert. Not long by today’s standards, the greens make this course. Also, this course has succulents around, throughout and virtually omnipresent. If you find your ball in them, my advice, take the drop. They are merciless. Get off to a good start as the front is easier than the back and the first five holes are scoring oppties. The first two holes are short par fours. The teeth are the greens fast with a predominantly right roll. The 3rd is a mid-length par three with a knob on the right third of the green. If you are on the wrong side of that, good luck. The 4th is a classic sucker hole, and I was, a short par four. Water all the way down the left side with a fairway bunker on the right side in the landing zone. Everything contours left. Consider laying up to your favorite wedge distance. The first par five, while uphill is reachable. Fairway bunkers left and right and the green is protected with half a dozen or so bunkers. The 6th is the shortest par three and is rated the easiest hole. The 7th is downhill to a well protected green with three front bunkers. I was lining up my putt when the Call to Prayer started. I thought that it may be an omen, but alas, I missed badly. The 8th is a mid-length par three with water right and three bunkers left. The 9th is a long uphill par five that bends left. Fairway bunkers both sides of the landing area with two fairway bunkers left about 80 yards out. Play it as a three shotter.
As I mentioned earlier you need to make hay on the front. One of the reasons for that is the back is almost 700 yards longer. I cannot recall another course with such a disparity. The 10th leans left. Pay attention to your yardage off the tee as there are four fairway bunkers scattered in play. The 11th is another sucker par four. Although this time with a water carry and three bunkers right. Having already blown the round, I threw caution to the wind and went for it. This time truth justice and the American way persevered over the dark forces of evil. I ended up just short right and perhaps more importantly dry. Fun hole, of course, most holes that you birdie are fun. I paid the price on the long par five 12th. Water all the way down the left side and I over cooked and splashed my drive. The fun was not over, the water hazard cuts across the fairway about 130 yards out and sure enough there goes ball number two. The 13th is the longest par four on the course that leans right. It is a “how big is your appetite” water carry. You will still have a long approach shot to a large green with two front bunkers. The 14th has water all the way down the right side. The 15th is a 250 yard par three. I hit driver and got a fortuitous bounce to barely get on the green. The 16th is the last par five and at 615 yards you will need to hit three good shots that avoid the dozen or so bunkers. Cairo typically gets less than an inch of rain a year. Sure enough, I was raining the day I played. The problem became the cart path tunnel from 16 to 17. It was flooded, I investigated a couple of ways over and around to no avail and ultimately had to wade thru the water. Something I certainly did not expect to encounter in the desert. The 17th is a lovely mid-length par three with a waterfall and water right. The finishing hole is a good one, long slightly downhill, water right and fairway bunkers left. The fairway contours right, so favor left of center. A dry tee shot is a good start, but then you will have a water carry approach.
Excellent golf course that I would pay to play again.

The latest ranking of the Top 100 Golf Courses in the World serves as the ultimate global golf bucket list. Most members of our World Top 100 Panel are seasoned golfers, each playing 20-30 of these courses annually while travelling extensively over decades to form their opinions on others. We recognise that opinions vary—even among our panel members. Rankings are subjective, and there are undoubtedly 50 or more courses in the UK and USA alone that could easily fit onto this list. Top 100 Golf Courses revises its North African rankings It’s been a while since we updated our rankings for Egypt, Morocco and Tunisia so we’re rectifying that situation now in this news release for North Africa. According to the R&A’s Golf Around the World 2019 report, there are a total of 111 courses located in these three countries but we think those figures (supplied by the US-based National Golf Foundation) are somewhat inflated for some reason and the true number in play is closer to 80. And as our charts for these three countries profile 40 of these courses we think we have around half the operating golf layouts covered in that part of the world. Over time, golfing opportunities for local players seem to be on the increase as national federations now run ambitious programs to encourage greater participation from young people and that can only be a good thing – it shouldn’t all be about relying on incoming golfers from Europe and beyond to sustain the sport. Egypt Looking at our new Egyptian listings, the top three positions remain as they were, which means the Greg Norman signature design at The Allegria retains its status as the No. 1 course in the country. Opened for business a decade ago as the centrepiece of a large residential development by leading real estate company SODIC, this course was Greg Norman’s first (and so far only) North African design. Managed by Troon Golf, this golf facility continues to set the standard for others to emulate. The Allegria The only new entry in our chart at No. 4 is the Thomson, Perrett and Lobb-designed course at NEWGIZA Golf Club, which debuted just last year. Located close to the Giza pyramid complex, a UNESCO World Heritage site, this 18-hole layout is also part of a massive residential project on the outskirts of Cairo. Dramatic elevation changes, sandy waste areas and several water hazards all come into play on what was once an old quarry outside the capital. NEWGIZA Golf Club Pater Harradine has told us about a new course he’s designed which is now ready to open, initially with nine holes, in the new Uptown Cairo development between the capital and New Cairo City. Thirteen holes have actually been grassed but completion of the other five holes is temporarily delayed due to the current coronavirus predicament. We’ve also heard from John Sandford who informs us about a new 18-hole layout he’s currently working on that’s due to open in 2021 at Hacienda Bay, near El Alamein on the Mediterranean coast. Like the Uptown Cairo course, we’ll be keeping a close eye on this layout after it’s fully unveiled. Rank/ To view the complete detailed list of the Top 10 Golf Courses of Egypt click the link. Morocco Golf development has slowed down considerably in Morocco in the last couple of years and that isn’t much of a surprise as, truth be told, there were probably too many golf facilities trying to entice not enough golfers, particularly around Casablanca and Marrakech. That’s not to say things have dried up completely, but the fewer number of courses that appear now are of a generally higher quality than many of the residential-based tracks of late. There’s no change at the top of our Moroccan standings, where the course at Golf du Palais Royal d’Agadir remains at No.1. Interestingly, although design credit for this remarkable layout is given to Robert Trent Jones, author James R. Hansen in his book A Difficult Par revealed it was RTJ’s associate Cabell Robinson who actually did the work. Or so we were told… until email correspondence in January with French-based architect Jeremy Pern revealed his involvement in the project: “Cabell called me at the end of June 1985 asking me if I could go to Morocco next week to build the course in Agadir. I found myself on site 10 days later, with plans that had been roughed out a few years earlier. Since then the sea had reclaimed a significant and important hunk of the site so we had to start afresh. Cabell dropped in a few times during the construction and so we more or less built it as we went along.” Golf du Palais Royal d’Agadir The first of two new entries comes into the chart at No. 3 and it’s the Jack Nicklaus Signature course at Michlifen Golf & Country Club in Ifrane, with the fairways set out at an altitude of five and a half thousand feet above sea level in the magnificent Middle Atlas Mountain region. Such is the kinder climate at this elevation, cool-season grasses were chosen for the layout, with creeping bentgrass used for tees and greens and Kentucky bluegrass for the sand-capped fairways and rough. Recent reviewer comments include: “it’s easy to see from the non-maintained areas next to the fairways that this wasn’t an easy site to build a golf course on as there are a large clusters of small rocks everywhere… you’ll be hard pressed to find a more memorable set of closing holes anywhere… I found the experience at Michlifen simply great, in all respects.” Michlifen Golf & Country Club The other newcomer makes an entrance at No. 6 and it’s the newly refurbished Blue course at Royal Dar Es Salam Golf Club in Rabat, host venue for the Lalla Meryem Cup on the Ladies European Tour since the tournament returned here in 2016. Following the success of the recent renovation of the Red course, a similar upgrade was carried out on the Blue course, with Cabell Robinson overseeing the work, together with ex-European Tour player Michel Besanceney, one of the club’s senior advisors. Michel told us: “Tees and greens were totally re-shaped, along with some fairway and bunker reshaping and large-scale tree clearing to widen the angles and perspectives. The shaping work was carried out by Dean Bedwell and the whole project has been under the close supervision of HRH Prince Moulay Rachid. We’re quite proud that this Sleeping Beauty doesn't pale against the Red Monster across the road.” Royal Dar Es Salam Blue course In other Moroccan golf news, we hear that the Palmerie Rotana Resort in Marrakech (formerly a 27-hole facility) has reduced the number of holes in play to eighteen, using the original nines that were laid out by Robert Trent Jones in the early 1990s. In the same city, renovation work is almost finished at Royal Marrakech, where Stuart Hallett and Jonathan Davison are overseeing a 2-year redesign of all the bunkers and the installation of a new irrigation system. Work began late last year on yet another course renovation, this time at the Pullman El Jadida Royal Golf and SPA near the coastal city of El Jadida, with James Duncan, the long-time Coore & Crenshaw associate, leading the efforts to trim back trees and upgrade all the greens, tees and bunkers. We’re still eagerly anticipating the arrival of the Al Houra course onto the Moroccan golfing stage. This 18-hole layout, fashioned by Graham Marsh Golf Design in collaboration with Vijay Singh, is situated within a 635-acre property on the Atlantic coast between Tangier and Asilah. The adjacent Hilton hotel opened last year during phase 1 of a Qatari-funded development that includes more hotels, residential villas, health club, shops and various other facilities. Hopefully, the golf course (which was built a couple of years ago) will be next to emerge. To view the complete detailed list of the Top 20 Golf Courses of Morocco click the link. Tunisia There’s not really much to report on the Tunisian golf front, where things have remained rather stagnant as the consequence of a couple of terrible terrorist attacks on foreign visitors which took place in 2015. Visitor numbers had picked up again and flights from the UK had just resumed when the latest coronavirus crisis put everything on hold once again. It can only be hoped that tourism will make some sort of miraculous recovery in the months ahead, as visitors desperate for some sunshine golf perhaps extend the holiday season into the late autumn this year. Make no mistake, Tunisia will be ready and waiting, with golf courses of a surprisingly high quality and green fees that are reasonably priced, providing an attractive, affordable golf product. Yasmin Valley holds sway at the top of our Tunisian table and it’s held the No.1 position since we first started ranking this country in 2009. Located a mere 15-minute drive inland from the Hammamet Medina, it’s a Ron Fream design from the late 1980s that’s routed across an undulating landscape of pine and olive groves. Next door lies two well-regarded 18-hole courses at Golf Citrus, making this a great 3-course destination for discerning players. Yasmine Valley The desert course at Oasis Tozeur, on the north edge of the Sahara desert, has now closed so it drops out of our chart, replaced by the course at Djerba Golf Club, which is a fine 27-hole facility on the small island of Djerba in the Gulf of Gabes, close to the border with Libya. Martin Hawtree laid out three nines here in the mid-1990s and the 18-hole layout of first choice comprises the loops of Les Palmiers (par is set at 37 with four par fives) and La Mer (par is 36 with three seaside holes). It was announced a while back that the Tunis Sports City project in the Lac de Tunis district of the capital would finally go ahead, after the project had languished for many years on the planning board. A Peter Harradine-designed 9-hole golf course is one of the prime sporting components of this development and we await its completion with great interest. Michel Gayon is also involved in designing an 18-hole layout at Tunis Bay Golf in Raoued, a new residential development located on the west side of the Sebkha Ariana salt flats, opposite the RTJII course at The Residence Tunis in Gammarth. The course is not due to complete until 2022/23. To view the complete detailed list of the Top 10 Golf Courses of Tunisiaclick the link. Jim McCann Editor Top 100 Golf Courses
Top 10 Golf Courses of Egypt and Tunisia 2017 We revise our course rankings for the North African countries of Egypt and Tunisia Egypt The press headlines for this country have not been very encouraging for visitors in recent months: “Egypt’s tourism industry is still reeling” and “Tourism awaiting recovery after a two-year decline” were just two of the articles to appear in the online versions of The Guardian and the Daily News Egypt newspapers. Political instability, security concerns and a couple of highly suspicious airline crashes have all been major factors in keeping people away and the withdrawal of Russian, German and British tour operators from the two main Red Sea resorts resulted in visitor numbers falling dramatically last year. People can still get to Sharm El-Sheik and Hurghada if they really want to by flying via Cairo, where air travel has continued uninterrupted, and the national carrier Egyptair is now flying a weekly service direct to Luxor from Heathrow airport, proving that tourism from the UK is still alive, even with drastically reduced numbers. Thankfully, golf sector developments continue unabated. We’re aware of Tim Lobb’s New Giza project to the west of the capital in the satellite city of 6th October and this is due to open later this year. John Sanford has also told us his 18-hole layout at the new Hacienda Bay resort near El Alamein on the Mediterranean coast will be launched at the end of 2018. There’s room for optimism then, even if it may take a little time for visitor numbers to reach the level they were at before the Arab Spring which swept through the region in early 2011. We know of only one golfing casualty since then – Taba Heights, near the border with Israel – so hopefully its closure marks the low point of a difficult period, with tourism now set to emerge stronger than ever before. And so to our newly revised Top 10 chart for Egypt, where Greg Norman’s first North African design at the Allegria retains its position at the top of the listings. It was described by one reviewer recently as “an amazing facility (which) has raised the bar for golf in Egypt and transformed it from a round of golf to a real experience” and we think it will take something rather special to knock it off the top spot. There’s little movement either up or down in the remaining chart positions, with the new entry of Palm Hills (A & C) at number 8 the only real item of note. A collaboration between John Sanford and Nicklaus Design, this two-year-old 27-hole design is set out on a 275-acre site within a large commercial and residential development, less than half an hour’s drive from the Great Pyramid of Giza. Tunisia Like Egypt, Tunisian tourism has suffered very badly from security issues within the country. “After Islamist Attacks, Tunisia’s Tourism Struggles” was a recent headline on the Reuters website, referring to what’s happened since the deadly shooting of foreign visitors in March 2015 at the Bardo national museum in Tunis and on the beach at Sousse three months later. Tour operators have since suspended charter flights and cruise operators have stopped sailing into Tunisian ports, causing European visitor numbers to plummet more than 50%. The hotel where the second deadly incident took place is one of more than two hundred that remain closed, which is a real blow to the local economy and the many thousands of jobs that rely on tourism. Because nearly all of the Sousse victims were British citizens, arrivals from the UK are a tiny fraction of what they were two years ago. Britain’s Foreign & Commonwealth Office warns against all but essential travel to Tunisia – a state of emergency is still in place within the country – and this edict is enough to deter even independent travellers who might otherwise choose to take a scheduled flight to Tunis or go via one of the French low-cost carriers that still fly into Hammamet, Monastir and Djerba. It’s a very sad and sorry state of affairs because there’s so much so see and do in a very hospitable country that’s renowned for welcoming visitors. The golf product is also of a very high standard – most of the courses (eight of the top ten, in fact) were designed by the respected American architect Ron Fream when he worked with Golfplan during the late 1980s and early 1990s – as we discovered on a Press Trip to Tunisia four years ago. Back to today though and our newly refreshed Top 10 chart for Tunisia sees Yasmine Valley in Hammamet hold onto the top spot. The course has been described as “a thrilling rollercoaster ride that twists and turns, rises and falls every inch of the way from the opening tee shot to the final putt… a very good course that will surprise and entertain in equal measure” and we think it’s well worth its status as our national number one. There’s not too much happening with the other chart positions but mention must be made of Flamingo Monastir, which re-enters our Top 10 at number 5, having dropped out of the listings when both the course and the clubhouse were closed for refurbishment a couple of years ago. It’s another Ron Fream layout, featuring a tricky short par four (called “Bunkers”) at the 275-metre 16th where, as its name suggests, four strategically-positioned sand traps lie in wait for big hitters who try to go for the green with their tee shot. Three new golf course developments to watch In spite of the slowdown in the development of golf courses in the United States, there are many new projects either in the planning or beginning stages of construction that still accepts investors. Below are three new golf course developments to watch. The criteria we used was based on safety of the location, other amenities that are available to golf aficionados as well as any family members that may travel with them; and, of course, the overall strategy of the venture. 1. Forest Lakes Country Club – Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada Nestled in the northern region of Canada, the Forest Lakes Country Club and golf course – a project in progress by Terra Firma Development Corporation and Nicklaus Design is finishing stage one of construction of their first 18-hole course to open the first 9-holes in mid-2016. Additional courses in the next phase include the balance of the 18-holes followed by the clubhouse and an Executive course thereafter. The only accommodations currently available in the immediate region are described as “horrendous” and Halifax, boasting of many first class hotels, is 100 km away. 2. Crystal Lagoons’ Porto Golf Marina – Alexandria, Egypt The Sharm-el-Sheikh Project in Cairo has announced collaboration with Porto Group for its fourth project phase to include a mixed-use golf marina overlooking the Pyramids. Crystal Lagoons is known for its Middle Eastern development projects and investing in this project opens up more opportunities for the company in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Jordan. Golf is one of the most desirable activities for businessmen visiting these locations. And the inclusion of luxury resort amenities only increases the potential for profits. 3. Ground Floor Golf Course Investment – Cuba The last on our list is the London & Regional golf resort, which was approved by government in June 2015. With the U.S. embargo lifted, the expectation for a dramatic increase in tourism is definitely on the horizon: the island currently lacks in all types of facilities to house and entertain visitors. This golf course and resort will be located near the Varadero Beach Resort which is north of Havana. The resort will include a 100-room boutique hotel as well as private residences. As an emerging market, Cuba offers those seeking long-term investments an excellent opportunity. Cuba desires foreign investments in specific sectors and while golf courses are not specifically on the list, when combined with a resort hotel it does meet the law. Several U.S. companies that travelled to Cuba with President Obama in mid-March are requesting a green light to do business on the island. Starwood Hotel and Resorts Worldwide is one that has been approved to manage the local hotels on behalf of the Cuban government. There is a warning sign provided by Canadian businessman, Mr. Tokmakjian, who was jailed for “bribing” his workers with dinners at local restaurants, televisions and vacations as rewards for performance. After being sentenced to 15 years in prison, he was released and deported back to Canada and all his investment property in Cuba over the last 20 years was confiscated, as confirmed by Wall Street Journal. The distinction of what’s legal and what’s not is somehow not clear in Cuba where Laws can change just like weather. Thus, this element of investing in Cuba landed it at the bottom of our list. Just between us, there are several rumors that a top rated binary options broker named Binary Uno is behind one of these projects. Sadly, we have yet to confirm the rumors or nail down the particular site of interest. Article by Groove Media Services Limited
