Kinloch does not have the ocean views of a Kauri Cliffs or Cape Kidnappers, but as golf courses go it is the best layout in New Zealand. The course is extremely intimidating visually from the tee with shaggy-looking bunkers as far as the eye can see, although when you are in the actual fairway it turns out there was much more room than it appeared. I played in February 2009 and the course was in fantastic condition and the greens were quick and smooth. Having played many Nicklaus designs on 4 continents, this is by far my favourite. It has the natural appearance of an Irish links and is so different from the typical Nicklaus design that normally has manicured conditions. My experience was that there were relatively few golfers on the course which meant the pace of play was outstanding. Even when you are in New Zealand it is a little out of the way, but it is well worth the time to play. The onsite staff is friendly and courteous.
