Kitzeberg
Situated near the city of Kiel, Golf-Club Kitzeberg is one of Germany’s oldest clubs. Nearly a hundred years passed before the club’s original 9-hole course was doubled in size – just in time to celebrate Kitzberg’s centennial at the start of the new millennium.
Today, the course measures 5,500 metres from the back tees, playing to a par of 71 (35 out then 36 in), with holes arranged as two returning nines, each of which finish with a par five. Water hazards come into play at several holes: a creek crosses the fairway on #7; ponds threaten on both sides of the hole at #9; and another couple of ponds protect the front of the green on #13.
Highlights on the more open front nine include the shortest of the five par threes at the 108-metre 8th (where the tee shot is played through a chute of trees to a green that was built on top of a big mound of boulders) and the double doglegging par five 9th, which twice turns left around a big water hazard before finally arriving at the green.
On the tree-lined back nine, the best of these holes from the original course include short par fours at the 13th and 17th, along with both par threes at the uphill 12th and heavily sand-protected 14th. The right doglegging 18th is the shortest par five on the card but it provides a stern finish, rising steadily uphill to the two-tiered home green.
World Top 100 Golf Courses
The latest ranking of the Top 100 Golf Courses in the World serves as the ultimate global golf bucket list. Most members of our World Top 100 Panel are seasoned golfers, each playing 20-30 of these courses annually while travelling extensively over decades to form their opinions on others. We recognise that opinions vary—even among our panel members. Rankings are subjective, and there are undoubtedly 50 or more courses in the UK and USA alone that could easily fit onto this list.
