Construction on the Lake Malaren Golf Club development started in 2003 and the club opened its South Lake course the following year. Twelve months further on, a second 18-hole course named North Forest was brought into play.
In 2010, the original course was redesigned to form the new Masters layout by Nicklaus Design, with Jack Nicklaus II overseeing the renovation work. The North Forest course followed suit three years later.
In 2011, the club hosted the first of five editions of the invitational BMW Masters tournament (it was called the Lake Malaren Shanghai Masters the first year) when Rory McIlroy won the first prize of $2 million.
