Laukariz (1-18)

Situated in the municipality of Mungia, to the northeast of Bilbao, Laikariz Country Club was established in the mid-1970s, offering members a wide range of sporting activities, including tennis, swimming and, of course, golf.

American architect Robert Putman – who also fashioned the North and South layouts at La Manga – was engaged to design the club’s original course and holes 1-18 were unveiled to the membership not long after his appointment.

Thirty years later, Blake Stirling and Marco Martin of Global Golf were hired to remodel the original course and expand the golfing element at the club by adding another 9-hole circuit, thus forming an impressive 27-hole layout at this large, multi-sport complex.

Holes 1-18 are still acknowledged as the premier course at Laikarz and the short par four 7th is a real feature hole. It bends sharply left around a small lake to a raised green and there are three bunkers on the opposite side of the fairway to catch wayward tee shots.

The latest ranking of the Top 100 Golf Courses in the World serves as the ultimate global golf bucket list. Most members of our World Top 100 Panel are seasoned golfers, each playing 20-30 of these courses annually while travelling extensively over decades to form their opinions on others. We recognise that opinions vary—even among our panel members. Rankings are subjective, and there are undoubtedly 50 or more courses in the UK and USA alone that could easily fit onto this list.
