Launceston
Having previously been called Mowbray Golf Club then Tasmanian Golf Club, Launceston Golf Club made its final name change in 1908. By then, it had an 18-hole layout in operation.
The initial nine holes on 67 acres, designed by L.A. Cuff in 1901, were extended to eighteen holes in 1906, after an additional 31 acres were acquired. A further 54 acres were obtained in 1919, allowing the club to remodel the layout.
The new design was undertaken by L.A. Cuff and G.P. Potter then Jock Robertson, the Kingston Beach professional, made further changes before and after World War II.
Vern Morcom was called in during the 1950s to offer advice but it seems that lack of funds prevented the club from implementing his recommendations.
World Top 100 Golf Courses
The latest ranking of the Top 100 Golf Courses in the World serves as the ultimate global golf bucket list. Most members of our World Top 100 Panel are seasoned golfers, each playing 20-30 of these courses annually while travelling extensively over decades to form their opinions on others. We recognise that opinions vary—even among our panel members. Rankings are subjective, and there are undoubtedly 50 or more courses in the UK and USA alone that could easily fit onto this list.
