Leeds

Golf was first played in the Roundhay Park estate in the early 1890s, with golfers playing on the front nine holes of the course that’s currently in operation at Leeds Golf Club (founded in 1896).

Alister MacKenzie was a member here between 1900 and 1910 and it’s said that he advised on course improvements to the original layout. Unfortunately, there appears to be no documentation to indicate what (if any) work was carried out.

Nowadays, the layout measures 6,115 yards from the tips, with par set at 69 (34 out then 35 in). Interesting to note, there are no par five holes on the outward half and the round ends with a par three.

The tree-lined fairways are laid out in two distinct compartments inside a property of around 95 acres: holes 1-6 and 16-18 sit closest to the clubhouse, with the others set out to the north of the estate.

Highlights include the par four 4th (rated stroke index 1); the first (and shortest) of the five par threes on the card at the 126-yard 6th; and the left doglegging par five 14th.

World Top 100 Golf Courses

The latest ranking of the Top 100 Golf Courses in the World serves as the ultimate global golf bucket list. Most members of our World Top 100 Panel are seasoned golfers, each playing 20-30 of these courses annually while travelling extensively over decades to form their opinions on others. We recognise that opinions vary—even among our panel members. Rankings are subjective, and there are undoubtedly 50 or more courses in the UK and USA alone that could easily fit onto this list.
