Built within a large, lake-laden property that lies between Prior Lake and Lakeville, the course at Legends Golf Club weaves its way around a number of menacing water hazards. All told, there are fifty acres of water and twenty acres of wetland areas in play, affecting thirteen holes in total.

More than a million cubic yards of earth was moved during construction, with three hundred mature trees (between 20 and 30 feet in height) planted at strategic positions around the layout, and a “stadium” design style ensures adequate hole separation throughout the layout.

The four par three holes are particularly challenging as each of them demands a heroic tee shot. A gully between tee and green on the 5th and a wetland area at the 7th mandates a forced carry on these two holes then water on the 13th and 17th demands the same all-or-nothing strategy on the back nine.

Legends Golf Club, an upscale public access course just south of the Twin Cities, is a decent layout that sports greens in tip top shape. The price is very steep, and you might feel as though you should be playing a slightly more interesting course for the hefty fee. The bunkers could use some work, and there was a little bit of dormant grass on the property the last time I walked it. That's not to take anything away from Legends--I really did enjoy the course but would not rank it as one of the top few public options in Minneapolis-St. Paul. It is a brute--as evidence by the 7100-plus yards and near 75 rating on the card from the tips--so make sure you bring your A-game. The best hole has to be the beautiful 13th, a par three with a forced carry that is the greatest opportunity to pull out camera and snap a photo during your round. The back nine was more memorable, in my opinion, and makes Legends worth a shot if you're in the area.

Strategic golf with a premium on accuracy and being correctly positioned to give yourself a way to put the ball on the proper area of the green. Not a place to go low but it will test your ability to manage your game.

Only a few holes where you want to try busting a drive. More often than not you will be using shorter clubs to keep yourself safe and not try to get greedy. Bunkers are well placed but are not in the best condition.

One of the best restaurants in the area.
