Legends Golf Resort (Heritage)
Operating a golf resort in Myrtle Beach can be a challenge, namely in finding the land necessary to host multiple courses. The Legends Resort decided it would be better off spreading its five courses around the region rather than cram more courses on one piece of property. One of the outsourced courses was the Heritage, which sits upon Pawleys Island.
Architect Dan Maples surely felt some pressure — not only because of Legends other celebrated courses, including Moorland and Heathland, but also because Heritage’s neighbors are Caledonia and True Blue, two original designs from the iconic Mike Strantz. Maples used the property to differentiate himself from Legends’ other options, largely by relying on the land to define his approach.
While the other courses play relatively open, Heritage behaves much more like Hilton Head golf than Myrtle Beach golf, winding through Magnolia Forests and marshland on what was once a rice plantation. Occasional bouts with heroism pop in now and again, especially during the final four holes, as the wide Duncan Creek creates several forced carries for players as they end their round.
