Machynlleth

Machynlleth Golf Club dates back to 1904 and its course is currently the only 9-hole layout that we feature in Wales. Absolutely nothing has changed here in over a hundred years so you’ll find wide, open fairways and lie of the land greens set out across undulating moorland terrain when you visit here.

Don’t bother to bring your sand wedge either as there’s not a single bunker to be found anywhere on this old course. If you think the absence of sand hazards is rather unusual then consider also the fact that sheep are allowed to roam freely across the fairways, complementing the totally rustic feel at Machynlleth.

There’s only one par five on the card, at the 477-yard 2nd and three par threes, two of which are played back-to-back at the 3rd and 4th holes. With a stream on the left, a small hill on the right and a fairway that slopes markedly from right to left, the 348-yard 7th is the regarded as the toughest hole on the card. It’s followed by the signature hole, the 193-yard 8th, where the tee shot is played from an elevated position to a green sitting at the foot of a hill, behind a pretty little brook.

World Top 100 Golf Courses

The latest ranking of the Top 100 Golf Courses in the World serves as the ultimate global golf bucket list. Most members of our World Top 100 Panel are seasoned golfers, each playing 20-30 of these courses annually while travelling extensively over decades to form their opinions on others. We recognise that opinions vary—even among our panel members. Rankings are subjective, and there are undoubtedly 50 or more courses in the UK and USA alone that could easily fit onto this list.
