Maesteg

Maesteg Golf Club was founded in 1912, with an inaugural 9-hole layout opening for play the following year. The club then moved a short distance to its current location during the 1920s. Towards the end of World War II, it was decided to remodel the layout.

The following edited extract is taken from James Braid and his Four Hundred Golf Courses by John F. Moreton & Iain Cumming:

“In January 1944 the club decided to sound out Braid, at the age of seventy-three, about re-planning the course. This indeed was planning for victory. In the first week of May he arrived and his report and plan were received later that month.

The committee then had second thoughts, wondering if a ‘bog section’ could be drained. It could, and Braid made a return visit on 29th and 30th June, offering an alternative layout. There was a vote and the second scheme was accepted.

Essentially it involved re-planning six holes and creating three new ones. In 1977 the course was extended to eighteen holes and in 1993 it had a new course layout. Braid’s holes are still recognisable: 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 8, 16, 17 and 18.”
