Listed by GOLF as one of the 50 best 9-hole courses in the world in 2020, Mahia Golf Club is a humble throwback links course that is routed through a low dune ridge. Located on the Mahia Peninsula between Poverty Bay and Hawke’s Bay, you can watch the sun rise and set over the sea from the clubhouse.

It was selected as a top course by GOLF in its list of 50 top nine-hole courses around the world for 2020. Mahia Golf Club is a simple links course which runs through an elongated dune valley. It is located in the Mahia Peninsula, which lies between Poverty Bay as well as Hawke's Bay, you can see the sunset and rise in the sea at the Clubhouse.

The club was formed in 1974 by enthusiastic golfers from the local area who laid holes on the land that was leased by the Captain Nigel Johnston at nearby Pahnui Station, Mahanga Beach. After ten years the club landed an agreement to lease Kaiwaitau Block. Kaiwaitau Block opposite the beach at Mahia which allowed members to start the process over clearing playing corridors the loan of equipment and creating the layout to be a 9-hole one.

The course today extends to a little over 2,900 meters starting from back tees. with a par of 36. The holes are arranged as par threes in two sections with two par fives as well as five four-par. Fairways, a lot of that are protected by lateral water hazards are fast and firm throughout the year and connect to greens with bunkerless bunkers which are more difficult to comprehend than you initially believe.

The highlight holes are the doglegged left opening (the most long hole in the game) and the 190-meter sixth (The Beacons") which is named for ship-locator beacons which were once placed in the high ground behind the green. The last hole worth mentioning as the two mounds that lie on each side of the elevated, two-tiered green at home give the hole the name "The Cleavage".
