Makena Golf & Beach Club is situated on the southwest coast of the Hawaiian island of Maui, beneath the towering shield volcano of Haleakala. Originally developed as the Maui Prince Hotel, the resort started out with a Robert Trent Jones Jnr 18-hole layout in 1981.
To cope with demand, this course was divided in two when it was decided to expand operations in 1993, with an additional 9-hole circuit added to each of the existing nines when forming the North and South 18-hole courses.
Managed by the Japanese Seibu Group until 2007, when the South course was closed, the resort changed hands several times before the place was eventually sold to the Discovery Land Company in 2014.
Dennis Wise, a former associate of Tom Fazio, was called in to remodel the former North course, retaining much of the original routing but changing one or two things, such as the conversion of the doglegged par four 3rd hole into a drivable short par four.
