History of Malton & Norton Golf Club

Malton & Norton Golf Club was founded in 1910, initially operating from a different location before relocating to its present home at Welham Park in the early 1920s. A nine-hole course was constructed on the new site, marking the beginning of a sustained period of expansion and development that would eventually produce the full 27-hole layout seen today.

Over the following decades, the club acquired additional land, appointed its first professional, and constructed a new clubhouse to accommodate a growing membership. The current Welham Course, the primary 18-hole layout, was opened in 1970–71, the product of successive design work by Hawtree & Son.

Further investment followed in subsequent years, with thousands of trees planted across the property, greens extended, and the bunker stock remodelled. In 2021, the club hosted the English Girls National Championship.

Course Layout & Playing Experience

Malton & Norton Golf Club occupies a gently undulating parkland setting at Welham Park, making it one of the more walkable layouts of its age in North Yorkshire.

The three nine-hole loops — Welham, Park and Derwent — each return to the clubhouse, a design feature that provides practical flexibility for visiting golfers and societies.

The combined 18-hole Welham/Park configuration stretches to over 6,000 yards from the back tees, presenting a tree-lined inland test where accurate driving and precise approach play are consistently rewarded. The Derwent loop offers a markedly different character. Shorter in overall length, it is defined by tight fairways, water hazards on several holes, and greens with subtle borrows that make reading the surface a genuine challenge.
