Review for Mendip

Reviewer Score:

Mendip is pretty much the best course in the area. It’s better than Wells by maybe a little bit. But perhaps it’s not as useful as Sherborne, which on this site appears only as a gem. However, to talk about Sherborne is to cross county lines and to enter Dorset. So yeah, for Somerset purposes this is the one. The views are excellent. Tantalisingly one can see the hill beyond which lies Burnham and Berrow. Now that is Somerset’s finest course. Back to Mendip though: there are some charming holes; the bunkering’s pretty good; it’s up and down dale so you get a good bit of exercise; it’s short but none too easy; while the greens are very lovely but inevitably slow. Overall, this is not golf country so it’s a kind of weird experience. But someone (Vardon to an extent but really Frank Pennink some years later) has done a decent job here. ANGLOSCOT
