Formed in 1927, Midland Country Club moved to its present location in 1951, when Ralph Plummer designed a new course. The layout closed for a major renovation during 2016 so it may move up the future Texas rankings.

Midland

Texas is one of the most golf-dense states in the Union when it comes to its numerous metropolitan areas. Get out into the country and celebrated golf courses become much more rare, just like water. Midland Country Club is the centerpiece of the Odessa area, hours from any other ranked course on Top 100’s Texas rankings. The membership has put in the work to ensure that it retains its position.

A Ralph Plummer design, the course underwent a significant renovation under Weibring Wolfard Golf Design in order to restore and repair greens, bunkers, and several ponds around the property. Although the surrounding desert may attract your eye, the sizable fairway bunkers will be more likely to attract your ball. The project also included creating new tees to keep the yardage at the competitive level expected of modern American clubs. Scratch players may consider moving up, as Midland now tips out at just less than 7,500 yards.

The renovation project also included the addition of a new par three course, named after Judy Rankin, the LPGA Hall of Famer and Midland resident who consulted on the short course.

Most members of our World Top 100 Panel are seasoned golfers, each playing 20-30 of these courses annually while travelling extensively over decades to form their opinions on others. We recognise that opinions vary—even among our panel members. Rankings are subjective, and there are undoubtedly 50 or more courses in the UK and USA alone that could easily fit onto this list.
