The 18-hole Hilltop course at Mollymook Golf Club is a tough test – carved from native bush with water in play at nearly half the holes – and it’s complemented by a short 9-hole course overlooking Mollymook Beach.

Mollymook (Hilltop)

Golf has been played in the coastal town of Mollymook since the early 1900s, when a short course known as “Mollymoke Links” was fashioned on private property near Collers Beach. Mollymook Golf Club was established with a 9-hole course in 1951 and within a few years the original sand greens had been converted to grass and the clubhouse relocated to overlook Mollymook Beach.

In 1977, the club realised it was unable to expand the Beachside course so it created the 18-hole Hilltop course on a separate property located a couple of kilometres inland to the northwest. Nowadays, most of the club’s turnover is generated through the licensed club operation on its original property, allowing the main golf facility to exist semi-autonomously away from the tourist trap overlooking the beach.

Feature holes on this tight, tree-lined Hilltop track include the 324-metre 7th, doglegging left past a creek that crosses the fairway, and the 178-metre 9th, which returns the outward half to the modest clubhouse facilities. On the back nine, both par threes (at the 178-metre 12th and 172-metre 17th) bring creeks in play, though only a badly topped tee shot should ever end up wet here.
