Montecastillo is one of the most popular golf resorts in the world and it hosted the Volvo Masters Andalucia for five consecutive years beginning in 1997 when Lee Westwood won the event.

Spain’s equivalent of Wentworth in England – its magnificent , late 19th century, El Castillo clubhouse is constructed with similar crenellated walls – Montecastillo is situated on an enormous 400-acre property which also boasts indoor and outdoor swimming pools, tennis courts, football pitches, a five-star hotel and villas that overlook the 18th hole of the golf course.

Located in the heart of the country’s main sherry and brandy producing region, Montecastillo was created by Jack Nicklaus in 1992 and it’s a long, demanding course, routed thoughtfully across rolling Andalucian terrain. In typical Nickalus style, everything is laid out quite clearly in front of you so it is playable by golfers of all abilities, provided they use the correct tee at every hole, of course!

Montecastillo is a splendid layout with some very testing holes and many visitors use buggies to cope with the often long, uphill or downhill walks from green to tees, particularly on the back nine.

The outward half is fairly open with water really only affecting the approach to the par four 7th green and the tee shot on the par three 8th hole. The inward half is a little tighter with the 13th hole having a great view of the Jerez Grand Prix circuit from the tee and the closing, par four, 18th elevated tee providing marvelous views of the hotel and castle.

Recent improvements have included the planting of 100-year-old olive trees around the course, the installation of a new drainage system and the introduction of silica sand to the bunker complexes.

You notice the signature of Nicklaus since the first Hole, very good golf course and lovely hotel. I went to Jerez at a very bargain price, buggies are expensive but green fee is included if you stay at the Hotel.

I had the pleasure of playing this course recently, and I have to say that the groundskeeper's keep it in very nice shape. But expect a good workout as you're constantly hiking up and down hills as you go from hole to hole. And the price is very reasonable, only 75 euro when I played there in October. Also, make sure when you book your tee time to reserve a buggy if you want one so they don't run out when you show up that morning.

Had the pleasure of staying and playing at Montecastillo recently. The golf course is not overly long and the rough not too punishing but there is enough trouble around to spoil a good card with water in play on several holes including the final 3. Many of the holes feature elevated tees driving onto generous fairways. The par 4 18th is the signature hole, with the fairway opening out in front of you down to the green and a lake 120 feet below. Personal favourite holes were the challenging par 4 doglegged 13th and the par 4 15th which is the stroke index 1 The rooms in the hotel are very nice and the service was excellent. The only down side for me was that the formula 1 track was right next door. When we where there a racing team were testing and the roar of the F1 cars could be heard from all over the course spoiling the tranquillity of the place.

"the golf course is not overly long"... what are you on about? It is 7,100 yards, that's pretty long by any standards. Great course, serious challenge. With the many elevated tees this is very much a driver's course, probably why Lee Westwood did well here.
